Hi Brian,

It would be hard to find any new movies/cartoons that don't fit into the pattern. Another site I found says: "Christopher Vogler worked on Disney movies and used Joseph Campbell's ideas to help create stories." (http://library.thinkquest.org/03oct/00800/journey.htm)

Christopher Vogler even wrote a book called "THE WRITER'S JOURNEY: Mythic Structure for Writers" (http://www.thewritersjourney.com/) and acts as a story consultant to Hollywood studios.

I could probably release many podcasts just going through and analyzing different movies.

I'm glad you liked the show! Now if I could find time to do another one ;)

Hey Bro,

I thoroughly enjoyed your essay. It'll make watching all of the other cartoons more palatable.

To all who are interested in trolls, I would like to recommend a novel by a Finnish author Johanna Sinisalo "Ennen päivänlaskua ei voi" (Not before sundown, 2000). Although I prefer Asbjørnen and Moe's trolltales, I advise everone to read the story about modern trolls in Finland. They are so much different to the Norwegian trolls :)
By the way, there is an awesome book "For noen troll" by Birger Sivertsen that covers not only trolls, but also other mythological creatures such as witches, trollcats, devils, or water sprites.

Lauren -
I'm glad that you enjoyed the shows and transcripts. This is why I did the shows. There is a lot of great information out there on the Monomyth. I strongly suggest going straight to the source and read Joseph Campbell's book “The Hero with a Thousand Faces.” (ISBN 0-691-01784-0). A link to it is on the other essay pages.

Best of Luck with your paper, I'd like to read it when your done!

I wish to share the joy that this podcast has given me. I'm Italian and I bought the 7th book at an international bookshop, but it wasn't open at midnight and I didn't have anibody to share the time with.
This podcast has been a sort of Mirror of Erised while I was waiting for the bookshop to open in the morning.

Thanks again

Thank you for that extensive answer! The part about trolls was pretty much familiar territory. Which I guess shouldn’t come as a surprise since from what you said that folklore seem to originate from these parts. But ogres was all new territory. Thanks again!

I certainly agree that old fairy tales can be scary or violent. The troll story that I remember best from my childhood is “Gutten som kappåt med trollet” or “Askeladden som kappåt med trollet” (Askeladden is a common character in Norwegian fairy tales), very badly translated is something like “The boy who had an eating contest with the troll”. The fairy tales boils down to Askeladden (the boy) challenging the troll to an eating contest. Askeladden fools the troll by hiding a sack under his clothing and putting most of his food in the sack. When the sack is full Askeladden pretends to stab himself in the stomach (but really stabs the sack), he encourages the troll to do the same. As you mentioned the intelligence of trolls isn’t high, so you can pretty much guess what happens next. If you happen to speak Norwegian here is a link to that fairy tale: http://norsknettskole.no/fag/ressurser/itstud/fuv/siritorstensen/askeladden.htm

On this subject I feel I should mention the artwork by Theodor Kittelsen. He’s famous for his fairy tale illustrations here in Norway. http://folk.ntnu.no/ongstad/Meg/Kunst/Theodor%20Kittelsen/Theodor%20Kittelsen.html If you follow the link that says “Troll-tegninger” you’ll see various troll drawings by him. I also love his drawings of Pesta (literally means She-plague). http://folk.ntnu.no/ongstad/Meg/Kunst/Theodor%20Kittelsen/Svartedauen/Pesta%20i%20trappen.html During the Black Plague Pesta was seen as the dead incarnate. She carried with her a broom and a rake. If she used the rake when she visited a home some people where allowed to live, but if she used the broom all life was swept up.

Many thanks for the podcast! This episode especially was a great listen, I loved finally hearing a full monomyth example with a story I was familiar with. Really well done! Very inspiring show; always makes me excited to get writing. :)

hello, just writing in to let you know that your legal disclaimer/appeal before the summary was not needed, because your invokation of characters and plots from the movie 'cars' for educational, review, and critical purposes falls under the fair use clause of copyright law. i enjoy your show, and only wish there were many more literary podcasts like it to give me something to listen to during the rest of the month. thakns.

The Podholes Podcast is coming to the MythShow. My episode #6 “Monomyth, The Return” will be their featured P.A.P Smear that will be reviewed in their next show. [...]

I look forward to hearing their review and incorporating their feedback. Fair warning - This is the last show I recorded before buying my new ZOOM H4. I have recorded some Myth Minutes since the purchase but it hasn’t made its showing on this feed, yet.

Hey! Love this as an outlet for learning about mythology. This was a great interview. I might have to read Heaven/Hell now.

I had one thing about the use of mythical characters in the book discussed. In it, Mur say(I haven't heard the book yet) that Anubis
eats the heavy souls. I know of 5 huge characters that over see the judgement of the soul. Thoth who weighs it, Osiris and his son Horus who oversees it,
Anubis who guards and guides it(egyptian reaper)and finally the one who actually eats heavy souls-Ammit the hippo/crocodile/lion.

I also had one request: Being that I'm in Hawaii, born there live there through my current eighteen years of life- I was wondering if you might do a showcase on some of those mythos. The big four(HI version of big three in greek) Kane(Kon-neh), Ku, Kanaloa, and Lono or even the over hyped about legendary Pele who is one of the most famous secodary gods(daughter of Haumea(supreme mother godess) and Kane(HI incarnation of Zues) and all her pantheon of brothers and sisters.

Hi from Portugal, Greg!

I just want to let you know how much I enjoyed listening to this episode and how eager I am now to subscribe to the Heaven podcast.

As for your show, I'm looking forward to start listening to some episodes entirely dedicated to Egyptian and Celtic Mythology. Are you planing something soon on these topics? Sorry to ask you for this, Greg, for I know this is a big challenge and your free time is probably scarce!

Your faithfull listener

Well, The Longest Journey is a computer game. But if you don't want to play you don't want to play, and as the father of four I'm guessing you don't have that much time for it. It's a shame though, because it's a really good game, let me rephrase, it's a really good story.

I am ashamed to say that I have never owned a gaming console and not a big video game player. (Though I'm extremely tempted by the Wii.) The most recent video games that I have played were the Harry Potter 1 and 2 games. I own HP Goblet of Fire but I've never installed it because I started podcasting.

It's to the point that I'd rather podcast than play a game.

You have a point. I have to reformulate my criticism to "I think you should be most concerned with making you characters interesting, before you make them symbols". Thanks for the Psyche example. Another, modern, example is April Ryan in the video game The Longest Journey. Have you played it?

Welcome to the show L-M, I like your comments.

I agree that it is not good to lower women to symbols, but to be fair, the steps of apotheosis and reconciliation with the father uses men/gods as symbols as well. I made a point to included the story of Psyche in the essay as an example of a heroine who has her own journey.

I completely agree that Harry Potter is great regardless of it's similarities to the Hero's journey. I used it as it is a popular story today that most people know. I wanted to show that this monomyth stuff is for all ages, not just ancient ones.

I like the troll/ogre question. I'll put that in the queue.

Thanks!

Hey,
Here is one more perspective on Campbell's book. I personally don't like the way it views women as symbols. I think women in fiction should be allowed just as much depth as the male characters. Other than that I think it's a good outline, but should be used only as that, an outline. If you just follow the "recipe" Campbell has set up and never allow your story to go beyond that it's, in my opinion, bound to become formulaic. The reason Harry Potter is great isn't because it has the aspects of a Hero's Journey, to me it's the wonderful characters and the fantastic humor.

Thanks for this wonderful podcast. I'm an aspiring librarian and it's wonderful to be able to combine education relevant to my future job and podcasts. My suggestion to a show topic would be beauty and the beast. Also I have been wondering about the difference between a troll and an ogre. Here (in Norway) they're always referred to as trolls (though it's of course pronounced differently in Norwegian than in English). I've heard troll used in English as well, but until the movie Shrek I'd never heard the expression ogre.

Crunchy peanut butter eater. ACK! I feel such a let down. C'mon, it's peanut BUTTER!

Let's hear it for taking the best from the stories and myths that have shaped our cultures and society. I once heard that cultures are judged by how they care for their dead. Perhaps we can change that to how we treat and educate the living instead.

I recently found your podcast on Itunes and am really enjoying it. You asked for suggestions for topics, so here goes:

1) Norse mythology
2) wiccan mythology
3) celtic/irish mythology
4) mayan mythology

And this isn't so much a topic idea as overall suggestion, but there's tons of info on Greek/Roman mythology out in the world, and most US schoolkids are taught it through several grades, so we've heard it. I'd love to see you focus less on it and more on other cultures that aren't as heavily covered. But that's my personal take. ;-)

I haven't really thought which of the three story types that I like better. But since I did name the show "MythShow" I guess I do have that preference. Another great suggestion for a topic.

Gregory,

I got the feeling from the podcast that you prefer myth to fairy tale. Personal preference is absolutely valid, I don't question that. I was just wondering if perhaps discussing that here or in the forums when they return wouldn't be constructive.

Hi!

I am always searching the web and itunes pod-casts for info about mythology and especially, the hero's quest. I listened to your pod-cast and became very interested, and I really hope you will discuss a lot of different hero path topics: what he does and how we can find this path back in our daily life; how this path works in novels and movies.

I am studying at the moment the book The Writer's Journey, by Vogler. It is based of-course on the work by Joseph Cambell and very nice reading.

My interest in this subject is because I am trying to use it in my writings. I wrote to novels till now, two children-books, and am woriing on a third one. Using the Path of the Hero in them is a real challenge!

Anyway, keep on going, I am waiting for your next pod-cast.

greetings,
André
